Position: Director of Special Education and MTSS

 

Description: 

1) Oversee the district's special education programs, ensuring compliance with state and federal rules and regulations for special education; Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education (MARSE). 

 

2) Oversee district-wide MTSS procedures (Tier I, II, and III) to support academics and behavior. 

 

3) Oversee student conduct, safety, and support services by assisting the School Director with managing disciplinary actions, providing support for student mental health, attendance, and academic success.

 

Status: Full Time

 

Position Requirements: valid Michigan Teacher Certificate with special education endorsement, valid Michigan Administrator Certificate, approval for supervision of special education through the MDE Office of Special Education, and 3+ years of experience working with special education programs. 

 

 

Special Education Responsibilities: 

  • Serves as district representative for IEP meetings.

  • Communicates information on programs, services, and regulations to school personnel, parents, the board and other districts for the purpose of understanding of the programs.

  • Coordinates with outside agencies to provide services to students and staff, for the purpose of offering appropriate services.

  • Maintains a high level of knowledge regarding developing special education issues, changes in the laws and case law, and educational methods of educating students with disabilities, for the purpose of managing an excellent special education program. Incorporates policies and procedures in accordance with laws and regulations. 

  • Ensures that all practices in the district are legal and ethical for each student/family so that each child has the opportunity to achieve at a high level. 

  • Manages special education complaints and represents the district in special education legal disputes.

  • Recruits, supervises, and evaluates special education staff in coordination with administration team. 

  • Supervises the training of special education instructional staff for the purpose of assuring well-trained personnel.

  • Provide updates to the school board as requested.

 

 

MTSS Intervention and Accommodation Responsibilities: 

  • Assist with the implementation and monitoring of district-wide academic and behavioral support frameworks, ensuring evidence-based interventions for all students. 

  • Enforce the student code of conduct, assist with handling behavioral infractions, and maintain documentation regarding student discipline. 

  • Implement student intervention strategies, support mental health initiatives, and foster a respectful environment. 

  • Act as a liaison between families and the school, ensure a safe learning environment, and help manage crisis situations.

  • Facilitate Child Study meetings with support from Resource Room teacher and Tier II interventionists.

  • Facilitate 504 team meetings to determine eligibility, develop, and review 504 plans annually. 

  • Ensure 504 plans are implemented in classrooms and follow state/federal regulations. 

  • Maintain confidential, accurate, and up-to-date records of all 504 plans, evaluations, and, when necessary, manifest determinations.

  • Work closely with school staff, students, and families to promote school attendance and help students overcome obstacles.

  • Assist School Director and Business Manager with implementing Title IX policies. 

  • Assist Business Manager as McKinney-Vento Liaison to ensure the identification, enrollment, and academic stability of students experiencing homelessness.
